Angel Haze

It seems like the resurrection of the Female MC is in full effect, remember the halcyon days of the mid 90’s to the early 00’s where there were several successful Female MCs? Well it looks like those days are threatening to return. We have seen the likes of Nicki Minaj take the mantle as the pre-eminent with record breaking success following the likes of Lil Kim, Missy Elliott, Foxy Brown & Eve. Now we have some young guns ready to come up, with Azealia Banks & Iggy Azealia garnering huge buzz & criticial acclaim off of their efforts, with former set to have a huge 2013.

This leads me to a 21 year old Detroit, Michigan native called Angel Haze who with only two singles released seem to be causing quite the stir (however she has released three Mixtapes). The tune or ranther Anthem ‘New York’ is a statement of Angel Haze’s intent, with her slick flow over the pulsating hand-clap driven beat.

I watched her on the BET Cypher where she more than held her own with Rappers such as Childish Gambino, Joey Bada$$ & the Pretty Motherf***er himself ASVP Rocky. The whole tom boy-ish image however while not being totally original (See Rihanna & Rita Ora) it does seem to be really her image and not something forced upon her, it does really remind me of Aaliyah circa 1996 when she dropped One In A Million LP. The long flowing hair covering one eye, boxer shorts & crop tops etc..

Now signed to Universal, and presumably working on a debut LP & a rumoured joint effort with Miss Azealia Banks watch this space. 2013 could be another breakthrough year for a Female Rapper, with the Legendary Missy Elliott back with new music & E.V.E (Eve) in the Studio it will be a welcome return to prominence for the Female MC.

Tyler James

I actually remember Tyler from a few years ago before he signed up to do BBC’s The Voice Competition and finishing Runner Up. It was his tune Why Do I Do that was playing on MTV Base one day, was a great, catchy song but unfortunately things over at Island the first time around didn’t take off, he did however manage to release an Album called The Unlikely Lad.

Now Tyler James is back after a strong showing on The Voice and a new Record Deal with Island for his efforts. Under the stewardship of Black Eyed Peas Frontman and Mentor from The Voice Will.I.Am a new Album is on it’s way called A Place I Go. James said he wrote the songs on the album with Fraser T. Smith who’s worked with the likes of Craig David & Taio Cruz & Guy Chambers, the co writer of some of Robbie Williams biggest hits.

With his single A Single Tear in constant rotation on the Radio and his LP soon following, also with Will.I.Am in his corner things are looking up for Tyler James a second time around.

Here is the remix of A Single Tear with Dot Rotten:

FRENCH SOUL PARTY

I actually did a piece on the Guys from Huddersfield earlier in the year, and to my amazement they still are not signed nor to my knowledge have any Management/Representation.

Now back to Business, it was the Track French Kissing that immediately grabbed my attention and compelled me to do a piece on the Band. They also made the BBC’s Introducing Blog in May off the strength of the great track. The Band remind me of when The Kooks broke through in ’06 with Naive, both Lead Vocalists have a similar most unconventional singing style and not that the tracks are similar as such but they both have the same vibe about them.

Their Soundcloud page has a couple other tracks in the same vein as the ridiculously catchy French Kissing, songs such as THC & another track called Greek are equally as impressive.

The Lads are currently in the Studio recording some more Material that hopefully should be out by the end of the Year. If their new material is as good what they have out, then 2013 will promise to be  a breakthrough year for them.

Here’s clever video to French Kissing:
